Chigiri uses individually torn and layered pieces of Mulberry Washi instead of a smooth stretched shade. The overlapping paper gives this 46.5-inch tower a visibly organic surface and creates subtle differences in brightness when illuminated.

Instead of trying to make every surface perfectly uniform, Chigiri uses overlapping torn edges as the visual feature.
Mulberry Washi Paper
Natural Washi fibers soften bulb glare and give the paper its warm translucent character. Chigiri then adds another layer of texture by tearing and overlapping the paper surface.

Because parts of the shade contain overlapping paper layers, the illuminated surface can show gentle differences in brightness. That variation is part of the Chigiri appearance.

Good to Know
Why does the paper surface look irregular?
That irregularity is intentional. Chigiri uses individually torn and overlapping pieces of Washi instead of one smooth continuous paper surface. Texture and layering will naturally differ slightly between lamps.
Is this mainly a reading lamp?
Chigiri is primarily an ambient floor light. The Washi shade diffuses the bulb and creates a soft surrounding glow rather than a concentrated directional beam.
How should I clean the layered paper?
Dust gently with a dry feather duster or soft microfiber tool. Follow the direction of the layered paper rather than scrubbing across the torn edges. Do not use water, steam, spray cleaners or a damp cloth.
